Chapter 14
The day was waning as we set out across the desert. The Orc cargo hauler was faster than the cargo skiff from the Rihla. The canine creatures had to run to keep up. They traded places with those on the vehicle at regular intervals to keep from getting too tired. I was increasingly impressed with how smart they were.
Eventually I came within sight of the butte where I had battled the Orcs. I gave the area a wide berth and settled into a patch of trees around a small oasis to make camp that night. The animals and I camped under the trees, but I covered the hauler with the camouflaging parachute just in case the Orcs came looking for us. I also unstrapped the packs from those who wore them. Between all the animals, I guessed they had collected enough of the glowing material to fill a couple of the crates I had seen the Orcs loading into the transport.
âSo, you were helping the Orrkasi,â I said, holding up one of the glowing stones.
As if to demonstrate, they began to dig in the ground. They used their bony shields like shovels, scooping up the dirt and then raising their heads so that the dirt cascaded across the head shield and across their back.
âI know you talk, so letâs see if you can speak my language,â I said. Then, pointing at myself, I said, âVan. My name is Vanâ¦Vanâ¦Van.â
The creature I had saved was curled up beside me but watching me closely. I couldnât help but laugh when it yipped, âVan!â
âThatâs right!â I replied. âIâm Van.â
âMook!â the creature said, bobbing its head. âMookâ¦Mook.â
I pointed at the animal. âYouâre Mook?â
It bobbed its head. âMook!â
The creatures all had names, and they all wanted me to know them. Sorj, Kilv, Wostâ¦I spent a lot of time learning names.
We all drank from the oasis, although I filtered the water and put it into my bottles. I didnât have enough food for the creatures, so I didnât eat either. I was hungry that night, but even more tired. The next morning we set out again early.
I worried about the transport losing power, but there was no gauge to see how much energy charge it had. Fortunately, it didnât die as we sped across the desert. At one point we were forced to take cover when an Orc ship rumbled in the distance, but it didnât come close to our hiding place. We didnât reach the mountains before sundown, but they were in view. Being able to travel without walking was hugely helpful. That night, we went down into a canyon to make camp. Some of the creaturesâthey called themselves âPolytrotsââwent off into the dark. I was feeling weak from hunger, but before long the Polytrots returned with several of the fat rabbit creatures they had caught. I took a chance and built a small fire in a little hole that I had dug. The Polytrots ate the hares raw, but I cut off a fat hind leg and roasted it over the fire.
